The Mystery of Hidden Compartments in Desks

The romance and mystery of secret compartments in antique desks surged with the popular movie, National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. In the movie, the hero, Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicholas Cage) has to break into the White House to find clues hidden in a secret compartment in the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. A second clue is found in the twin desk at Buckingham Palace. The secret compartments open up with a combination involving how far the other known drawers are pulled out. It is quite elaborate, and appeals to the detective in all of us!

An actual finding of valuable documents in an old desk happened in the early 1900's. In 1794, the future 5th president of the United States, James Monroe, purchased a Louis XVI desk that had a secret compartment. James Monroe did not tell anyone about this secret compartment. It wasn't until 1906 when one of Monroe's descendants, a child, damaged the desk. The desk was taken to a cabinet maker to be repaired and the secret compartment was discovered. Inside were priceless and historical documents, including letters from Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Considering that Jefferson burned most of his personal correspondence, this truly was a treasure!

Today, many antique seekers dream of finding a desk with a secret compartment containing hidden treasures. So what should you be looking for to help you narrow the search?

Though they had been around for awhile, secret compartments in desks, inspired by the Italians, became popular in English and American cabinet making around 1720. The trend continued for about 100 years, and though later ones can be found, they were not as common. One reason that they became desirable was for strictly functional reasons: a secure place to keep valuable documents, money and jewelry. Today we use safety deposit boxes and safes, but they were not in existence back then, so hidden compartments helped people feel secure.

Some desks would have only one hidden compartment, others would have many. In one simple slant top desk, 21 hidden cubbies were discovered. Some compartments are a decent size, and may be found under false bottoms in a drawer. Document boxes were one type of larger hidden compartments that became quite common for awhile, often hidden behind the half column pilasters that flanked the central section. Other secret compartments are quite small with just enough room for a few folded bills or perhaps a small piece of jewelry.

Some secret compartments in desks could only be reached by removing a series of regular drawers, others were concealed behind ornamental trim. Some were opened by raising them up with a fingernail or letter opener, and others were held in place with a wooden spring that first had to be released. This complicated the process because of the additional trick of finding the trigger for the spring. The best way is simply by feeling around.

After seeing a few of these hidden compartments, one has to admire the ingenuity of the cabinetmakers of the time. I have heard of some desk owners taking years to locate secret compartments that there were sure that existed. So owning an antique desk and discovering its secrets, is more a work of love for the challenge, not a "get rich quick" deal.

So the question remains, does the real Resolute desk in the Oval office have a secret compartment? I did a little checking around and cannot say for sure. I found one person online who confidently said, "Yes!" but gave no documentation or proof, so my answer is, "I don't know, but would love to find out!"

Play is what being a kid is all about. By creating a fun and functional child playroom we give our kids the best foundation there is. The fun part comes in how you bring the room together with decorative accessories like fashionable slipcovers, wall decals, posters, and funky storage bins.

No matter their age, kids are natural magnets for stuff. Open shelving with lots of bins is often best way to go as it provides storage flexibility for now and in the future. *Revitalize old metal shelves with a little spray paint.

*Purchase unfinished shelves and paint them to match the room.

*To protect little fingers and bruises from hard edges consider padding your child's toy box with quilt batting and fabric that matches the rooms décor.

*Create handy little cubbies by installing a few wooden shelving boxes here and there.

*Since kids love to play in enclosures consider purchasing a lightweight nylon tent, or making one yourself in a fabric that co-ordinates with the room. Another great idea would be to add some nylon crawl though tubes and cardboard house than can by decorated by your kids using paints or markets. Catalogues and magazines are a great source for ideas that you can adapt and craft yourself.

Milk crates are the ultimate answer to those with home storage needs. They really take up very little space when stacked. They can also be cleverly transformed into any type of furniture imaginable. They are amazing, sturdy little boxes that should be part of any home.

The average milk crate is thirteen inches long, thirteen inches wide, and eleven inches high. If you can find a bunch of uniform milk crates, they can stack pretty high in a corner. They do not exactly lock together, but they stay fairly sturdy when piled. You can lift off a bunch of crates at a time to easily get to any crate in a stack. They can also be placed on shelves as shelf dividers or drawers for extra storage.

We use milk crates as the base of our kids' beds. We tied a bunch of clothes together and hold clothes under there. These are not the clothes that they are wearing now, but hand-me-downs for the next sibling or clothes that they do not yet fit into. The only trouble you'll have with milk crates is finding them. It is against the law to use milk crates from operating milk farms. However, if you know of a farm that went out of business, you can see if they'll sell them to you. These are by far the most study crates around. They can be found at yard sales as well. However, you'll want to make sure that the milk farm doesn't want them anymore or you could get into trouble. You can also buy them on Amazon and other stores, but their quality and sturdiness will vary. They're still worth it and an asset in your home.

Simple Organization Tips to Organize Kids Fast

It seems that most people struggle with clutter in their homes. Physical clutter creates mental clutter. It's like a monkey on your back that you have all this "stuff" that needs to be dealt with before you can start anything at home. In this day and age no one needs the extra stress that mental clutter can bring.

Here are some statistics from NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) that should wake us up to the fact that clutter is weighing us down. Eighty percent of the items that are kept in our homes are not really needed or used. Including all the clothes in our closets. Did you know we really on wear twenty percent of the clothes hanging in our closets? Clearing out clutter would eliminate forty percent of housework in the home. These statistics prove that any organization tips are needed and welcomed by most people.

If we collectively, as adults are that unorganized, can you imagine how unorganized our kids are? I'm painting a pretty grim picture of clutter, but it's inevitable around the house especially with kids. But, you can manage and control the clutter in your home, especially if you involve your kids and teach them these organization tips listed below.

So, here are some organization tips to organize kids, even before they are born!

Organization Tips for Expectant Moms

You're going to be busy with a new baby, so it's best to prepare as much in advance as possible, then change things and re-organize as needed once your new baby arrives.

Here's some tips for the "little but, helpful things" we don't tend to think of before the bundle of joy arrives.

Changing diapers. Use a changing table with open shelves underneath and put baskets in the open shelves to organize diapers, extra clothes, wipes, burp rags, etc. Hang a shelf above the changing table and use baskets to store things you don't want your baby getting into once they're mobile like diaper cream, combs, brushes, baby lotion, etc.

Keep a diaper changing caddy filled with extra diapers, wipes, diaper cream, etc. Anything you use to change your baby should go in the caddy so you can carry it room to room if needed.

If you're going to breastfeed then purchase a breast feeding pillow and keep a caddy filled with stuff you'll use while breast feeding. Good things to keep on hand are lanolin to prevent sore breasts, Soothies for sore breasts, tissues, baby wipes, water for you, a couple of burp rags, reading material for those long nursing session, etc.

Some type of basket like a Moses basket or seat to set your baby in and carry from room to room with you.

Kids Toys

As kids grow, they accumulate a lot more stuff, especially toys, so here's some more tips.

Categorize toys according to kinds or sizes. Blocks, dolls, balls, etc. can be good categories to start with.

Use storage containers and baskets to contain it all.

Label everything so your kids know where to put things when it's clean up time. If your kids can't read yet, then use pictures for labels.

Organization Tips for School Kids

Install cubbies and shelves with hooks in your entryway so kids can put up their caps, shoes, coats or jackets when they get home.

Teach kids to empty their backpacks and give you all notes from school, permission slips, etc.

Dedicate a working corner for the kids to do their homework and other school activities. Use boxes and storage containers to organize this area.

Get your kids to do some chores to teach them responsibility and help you out around the house.

Teach kids to prepare for the next day the night before by packing their backpacks, making their lunch, and laying out what they are going to wear the next day.

Teach your kids to write out "to do" lists so they don't forget anything.

Start early teaching your kids how to get organized. The organizational skills you instill will serve them well as they continue to grow into adulthood.

Kids Closet Organizer Turning Useless Space Into Storage Space

"Clean your room" and "Put these things away" seem to be repeat phrases in any household with children.
